Lau's Little List - July 6, 2024
Something old, something new, something Borrowed...
Greetings friends!
I hope your 4th of July (or other national Independence Day) was filled with family, friends, and fireworks for all of you. We had a wonderful time visiting with out-of-town relatives, so this weekend is time to relax. While don’t we all unwind with some reading, writing, and randomness to enhance our R&R?
I believe this quote sums my theme up quite nicely:
Quote of the Week:
“If you want something new, you have to stop doing something old.”
— Peter Drucker
An Old Legend In a New Light:
Elvis by Baz Luhrmann. I know he’s the King of Rock, but I can’t say I’ve ever deliberately listened to a song by Mr. Presley.
Until now.
This biopic is so lively, so captivating, so entertaining, that I caught myself repeatedly saying to myself a sentence I honestly never thought I’d utter: “Wow — Elvis was SO cool!” The combination of Austin Butler’s performance and Luhrmann’s kinetic directing (plus the incredible sets and costumes and music and ensemble) made this two-hour movie fly by. There’s a reason this man is a legend, and his life story is a testament to his passion, creativity, and determination. Watch this film even if you think you won’t like it — as Elvis himself once said, “Don’t criticize what you don’t understand, son.”
An Old Trick to Gain New Readers:
Tiktok 2.0. A few years ago, I had a bit of a streak on Tiktok — over 100 days in a row of posting content, which garnered me about 1000 followers. It was actually fun making those goofy, self-effacing clips, but it became time-consuming and lost its purpose.
I’m not doing that again.
Instead, I’m planning to make clever clips on either Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube that will help promote reading (including my books). In fact, I’d love your input:
Random Review Request:
The Borrowed Daughter. I know I hyped my latest book a lot recently, and I hope you picked up a copy and enjoyed it. If you did (or even if you didn’t), I would love an honest review from you. It doesn’t have to be anything long or detailed; any feedback is welcome. We all check reviews before we buy Gummy Bears or face paint or banana slicers; books are no different. The more reviews I have, the more people can discover my writing. I would truly appreciate it if you could help that happen! 🤗
And that's it! What did you think? Please share Lau’s Little List with anyone who you think would enjoy my recommendations!
I would greatly appreciate any feedback you'd like to provide. Which tip was your favorite? What would you like to see more or less of in the next installment? Do you have any other suggestions? Feel free to leave a comment below with your thoughts.
