Greetings!
Is that the end of July on the horizon? I guess we’d better make the most of this last weekend of the month! The Lau family is hoping to squeeze a lot of fun out of these last few days, from stunning sports, sunny shores, and spectacular songs.
Speaking of which, how about this Saturday’s list focuses on revered rings, relaxing resorts, and rock ‘n’ roll? I thought you’d agree.
If you don’t, perhaps this quote will change your tune:
Quote of the Week
“Live all you can - it's a mistake not to. It doesn't so much matter what you do in particular, as long as you have your life. If you haven't had that, what have you had?”
— Henry James
A Revised View of Those Iconic Rings
Revisionist History: Hitler’s Olympics with Malcolm Gladwell. The Paris Olympics kicked off yesterday in spectacular fashion, and everyone in our family is eager to catch all the exhilaration, upsets, and inspiring stories. I’m not trying to put a damper on any of that excitement, but the modern pageantry of the Olympics — in fact, the continued existence of these biennial games after the lackluster response of the early 20th century — is almost entirely “thanks” to Nazi Germany.
In this series, Malcolm Gladwell explores the controversies leading up to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and how certain key figures — athletes, officials, and even the Fuhrer himself — played a role in shaping the future of the greatest showcase of amateur sports. Brace yourself for the drama, the heroics, and yes, the humor, of this eye-opening series.
Regal Comfort Along the Algarve
I know I already raved about my recent trip to Portugal, but I only really told you about some highlights from Lisbon. For the second half of our vacation, my wife and I soaked up the rays on the salty sands of Lagos, a beautiful historic town along the southern shore. That whole coastal region, known as the Algarve (“The West” in Arabic), has breathtaking cliffs, incredible grottos, and gorgeous waters.
But that was only part of the thrill of this seaside getaway. Our resort, the wonderfully named Charming Residence Dom Manuel I, exceeded every expectation. From the spacious, plush bedroom to the tropical pool area to the sprawling breakfast spread, we felt like royalty in our own little world. If you ever find yourself cruising the Portuguese coast, treat yourself to a stay at this immaculate hotel.
Rhythmic Riffs from Red Rocks
“Rabat” by Balkan Bump. We have had the incredible fortune to attend a couple concerts at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater over the years, and both times this talented trio performed there. Will and his band blend electronic beats with Middle Eastern grooves to make hypnotic music the whole family can groove to (and I say that from experience — our crew has had countless dance sessions to this group’s infectious tunes!) Who knew you could get so much musical magic from a trumpet, a clarinet, and an oud?
And that's it! What did you think? Please share Lau’s Little List with anyone who you think would enjoy my recommendations!
I would greatly appreciate any feedback you'd like to provide. Which tip was your favorite? What would you like to see more or less of in the next installment? Do you have any other suggestions? Feel free to leave a comment below with your thoughts.
